ROCORI board adopts several MSBA policy updates; student‑survey screening to be reviewed

The ROCORI Public School District school board approved a batch of policy updates on routine, technical changes recommended by the policy committee, while setting aside one substantive policy for additional review.
The board accepted two sets of model and locally recommended policies in single readings after the policy committee reported that most changes were technical. "MSBA has just a few updates, almost technical in nature," the committee representative said, noting there were "no substantial changes to anything." The approved items included policies on open and closed meetings, public participation, committee descriptions, family and medical leave, harassment and violence, staff evaluation (to be retired in favor of contract provisions), student surveys, Title I parent involvement and transportation safety language updates.
Board members raised one policy area for further work: Policy 5.20 on student surveys contains language that refers to screenings, which can collect identifiable information. One board member asked whether the district should adopt a separate screening policy to ensure that data collected in screenings is handled differently than anonymous surveys; the committee agreed to research the issue and bring a recommendation to the next policy meeting.
Policy 07/22, covering public data and data‑subject records, was identified as having multiple legislative changes and will follow the standard three‑reading process; the board took no final action on that item tonight.
The board’s motion to approve the first set of policies in one reading passed after a voice vote. A separate motion approved the second group of five MSBA technical updates. The committee cited policy 208 (which permits fewer than three readings when changes are minimal) as the basis for the single‑reading approvals.
The board directed staff to add consideration of a dedicated screening policy to the next policy‑committee agenda and to return Policy 07/22 for additional readings before a final vote.
