Polk County commissioners approve $500,000 in opioid-settlement grants

Polk County commissioners voted to approve recommendations from the county's opioid-settlement advisory council to allocate about $500,000 in grant funding to local organizations.
Speaker 10, who led the public-health summary, said the RFP drew nearly $1 million in requests. "We had almost $1,000,000 in requests through this RFP process," Speaker 10 said, and staff recommended partial funding for 12 of 14 applicants based on geography, service area and MOA-required best practices.
The recommended awards include partial funding for Tri County Community Corrections; Riverview Recovery Center; Recovery Partners Incorporated (two projects); Tri-Valley Opportunity Council (family resource centers); and several local schools and community organizations listed in the packet. Speaker 10 said staff would negotiate final scopes and amounts with applicants who choose to participate.
Commissioners discussed oversight and fraud concerns. Speaker 6 expressed appreciation for the review process and noted regional concerns about where funds go when distributed, saying it was important to ensure accountability. Speaker 10 replied that letters to unsuccessful applicants were prepared and would be sent, and that the advisory council included diverse representation and lived experience.
The board approved the recommendations by voice vote; staff will finalize agreements and return to the board if applicants decline or scopes change.
