The Select Board approved a motion on Nov. 18 to proceed with paperwork to release the title on a 2018 Ford Explorer that the police department had previously provided to an external outfitter in exchange for vehicle strip/outfitting labor.
Sergeant Spitaleri explained that earlier in the year the department arranged to dispose of three cruisers: one Ford Taurus and two Ford Explorers. Rather than selling the vehicles via auction for nominal sums ("we'd get $200"), the department worked with an outfitter in Atkinson who stripped equipment and performed labor on the town's remaining apparatus in exchange for the vehicles. "We exchanged the cars for labor on our stuff," Sergeant Spitaleri said, noting an approximate $1,000 labor credit per car (totaling about $3,000).
Board members said they needed written documentation before completing the title release: a bill of sale and an invoice outlining the labor provided. The board agreed to sell the second Explorer for a nominal amount on paper (for example $1) to permit transfer and asked staff to obtain an invoice showing the labor credits before signing documents.
Next steps: staff will obtain the outfitter’s invoice and prepare a bill of sale for the board to sign to effect the title transfer.
