The Nevada Community School District Board of Education met Nov. 17 for its organizational meeting, swearing in new directors, electing board officers and approving the district’s FY26 line-item general fund budget.
Tammy of the business office presented the budget figures for the coming year, saying, “Our revenues are going hopefully going to be 21,230,000. Expenditures, 20,000,994 for a difference of about 235,000.” She told the board the draft preserves most prior line items while updating salaries, utilities and election expenses and that special-education coding will be adjusted to align with state reporting levels and Medicaid billing.
Why it matters: the line-item budget establishes spending authority for the general fund and sets accounting detail the district will use for payroll, benefits and program allocations. Board approval allows administrators to operate under the updated figures for FY26 and move forward with more precise special-education coding requested by the state.
Board action and officer elections The board approved the county’s abstract of election results after being informed that the Story County Board of Supervisors had certified the election; district officials mentioned that Tori Karshrud and Emily Schack received the highest votes in the director-at-large contest. Following the adjournment of the retiring board, newly seated directors took the oath of office.
During the organizational portion, the board elected Marty Chitty as president and Tom Mayer as vice president by voice votes after nominations were made and seconded.
Other housekeeping items The board voted to authorize the board president or board secretary to issue payroll checks and pay utility bills and to recognize discounts on bills paid within specified timeframes. Members designated the Nevada Journal as the district’s official publication for statutory public notices and designated the law firm Allers and Cooney as the district’s legal counsel.
Special-education coding and reimbursements Tammy and Dr. Asmus discussed a planned recoding of special-education assignments into state-defined levels (level 1, 2 and 3) intended to ensure that staff time and Medicaid reimbursement align with students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) weightings. Tammy said the district will collect more precise teacher/associate time data from staff and update coding; she emphasized that dollar totals in the budget are expected to remain essentially the same while the accounting detail becomes more accurate.
Consent agenda, personnel and operations The consent agenda — which included three resignations and four transportation hires — passed by voice vote. Board members discussed calendar questions related to taking a Friday off and how snow days affect the school year; administration said adjustments would be handled in consultation with legal counsel and by accounting for makeup days. Members also discussed logistics for pep buses, band transportation and game streaming; administration said additional buses could be chartered as needed and confirmed that the final would be broadcast/streamed.
What’s next With the FY26 line-item budget approved and organizational appointments complete, administrators will proceed with implementation under the updated coding and budget structure. The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Dec. 1, 2025.
