Brentwood Recreation commissioners on Thursday called fundraising and volunteer management top priorities to revive the concession stand and support programs.
S3 and other commissioners described the concession stand as an underused asset that could become a revenue source if renovated and staffed. "The concession stand is a very big asset to recreation," Unidentified Speaker S5 said, while S1 noted logistics including insulation, rodent-proof storage and staffing must be addressed before renovation.
Commissioners suggested several immediate steps: create a punch list of small repairs for volunteer work, solicit in-kind donations from businesses such as Lowe's or Tractor Supply, and begin a focused sponsor outreach program (banners were discussed as a $200–$300 sponsorship product). Several members proposed a volunteer database or sign-up system so specific asks go to people most likely to respond rather than broad appeals on social media.
Food safety and liability were raised repeatedly. S3 recommended food-safety certification for volunteers who prepare or serve food; commissioners proposed using prepackaged items or waivers for at-home prep programs to minimize risk. One commissioner suggested allocating a percentage of concession revenue to particular programs to increase parent buy-in.
The commission also discussed bundling sponsorship and visibility: placing sponsor banners on the garage facing the parking lot, and offering sponsors a presence in the town newsletter and on program pages. Commissioners asked staff for a short punch-list of immediate concession repairs and a proposed outreach plan that can be implemented with volunteers ahead of any major renovation.
Next steps: The commission asked staff and volunteer leads to assemble a prioritized punch list for concession improvements, draft a volunteer-signup approach, and identify several sponsorship prospects to contact before the December meeting.
