Recreation commission frames 2026 as a 'low-cost, high-impact' year, prioritizes irrigation, landscaping and program space

The Brentwood Recreation Commission on Thursday told members to prepare project proposals for 2026 focused on visible, lower-cost improvements they say would deliver outsized community benefit.

"I would like to have 2026 be a low-cost, high-impact year," Unidentified Speaker S1, who led the meeting, told commissioners as he asked each member to bring at least a few project ideas for discussion in December. He said the intent is to give a new recreation director a ready set of initiatives to pick up.

Why it matters: S1 said the commission wants projects that are visible to residents and straightforward to implement — items that will show community progress quickly. He listed three near-term priorities: irrigation work on the lower fields to address deteriorating turf, small landscaping and signage upgrades around the facility, and converting the rec center basement into a program room for youth nights and weeknight activities.

The irrigation estimate mentioned in the meeting was about $26,000; S1 said impact-fee funds have been discussed as a potential source but asked staff to confirm which impact-fee dollars are oldest and whether any expire if unused. Commissioners also discussed fundraising to supplement town funds and the need to identify concrete, fundable projects before soliciting donations.

Commissioners emphasized community engagement in selecting projects. S3 urged outreach to local businesses and civic groups for in-kind work and materials; S2 suggested recruiting property- or garden-focused volunteer partners to lead landscaping efforts. The commission set a December follow-up specifically to present prioritized project lists and possible funding approaches.

Next steps: The commission will reconvene in December to review members' proposed projects and refine a short list for the coming year, with staff asked to check impact-fee balances and ages before the next meeting.
