Committee probes FRL and IEP trends as accountability data show mixed gains

Members of the North Kingstown School Committee pressed administration for more detail after a presentation of the October enrollment snapshot and accountability indicators.
Administration presented the statutory October 1 enrollment report and a comparison with the prior year. Committee members noted a rise in free-and-reduced-lunch counts—particularly at Davisville Middle School—and asked whether the change reflected demographic shifts, redistricting effects or threshold changes that could affect Title I status. A committee member noted that Davisville’s FRL share is approaching the district’s Title I threshold and asked administration to monitor federal guideline changes.
Members also raised concerns about an apparent gender disparity in individualized education program (IEP) counts. Administration clarified the evaluation and eligibility process and agreed to follow up with detailed breakdowns. A member requested that formulas in the assignment-and-transfer spreadsheet be validated; administration said it would share the underlying formulas and data.
The committee asked for a future presentation that includes McKinney‑Vento counts (homeless students), enrollment formulas for current-enrollment calculations, and an explanation of transfer patterns, especially kindergarten-era movements that have driven some volatility.
