Board honors longtime employee Howard Avery; members promote community events

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. — Board members used a portion of the July 31 meeting to recognize longtime community figure Howard Avery and to spotlight several upcoming community events.
Howard Avery received a certificate of appreciation from the board and remarks from Raylene Berthold, director of recreation and parks, and Chief Ewanshu, who recalled Avery's years of service for parks and for school facilities. Berthold said Avery "did whatever was needed of him" and highlighted a past donation that funded camp scholarships; Chief Ewanshu praised Avery's positivity and community commitment.
Board President read the certificate of appreciation and noted the document was signed by the superintendent and Board President Edwin Estrada.
Board members also promoted community gatherings and programs: Mister Freddie Williams previewed the fourth annual It Takes a Village Barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Davidge Park and reminded residents about Middletown National Night Out, scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Thoreau Park. Dr. Patricia De Jesus described a new art-therapy program from Second Chance Counseling that offers expressive arts for children and young teens on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m., with insurance collaborations to limit out-of-pocket costs for families.
