Board appoints Jake Stroud to serve as Monterey County treasurer-tax collector

The Monterey County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Nov. 13 to appoint Jake Stroud as treasurer-tax collector effective Dec. 30, 2025, when incumbent Mary Zieb retires.
Stroud told the board he has nearly 16 years of public finance experience, nine of them working alongside Zieb, and emphasized continuity for the department that manages roughly $3.5 billion in investments and collects more than $1.1 billion in annual taxes. County counsel advised the board that the government code permits the board to appoint an interim officer to serve the remainder of an elected term when a vacancy occurs.
Several colleagues and department staff, including the chief deputy treasurer and administrative services staff, testified in support of the appointment, telling supervisors that Stroud's experience and institutional knowledge would preserve continuity of services for taxpayers, school districts and special districts.
Supervisors described Stroud as qualified under county code requirements for education and experience and praised outgoing Treasurer Zieb for her 38 years of public service.
