Marcela Cortez, arts program coordinator, told the Brookhaven Arts & Culture Commission that the International Festival — scheduled in about 12 days — will feature three immersive “voice-in-a-box” artist installations to be placed near the stage and artist market entrance on Corporate Boulevard.
Cortez said the artists have largely completed work at studios and that organizers hope most boxes will be ready for delivery and on-site installation by Wednesday before the festival. She said the city and contractor will provide small ramps to make the boxes ADA-accessible when required, and that generators will supply power for the artists’ equipment. “We’re going to have volunteers to make sure nobody takes anything,” Cortez said, adding that staff had requested overnight police presence beginning Thursday to reduce theft risk and that boxes will be covered when unattended.
Commissioners pressed staff on practical issues including how closely the installations should be sited, whether sound from one box would bleed into another, and how to manage loose or removable elements. Cortez said artists will supply speakers and most audio systems; festival staff will provide power only and will work with each artist to limit interference and ensure compatibility. Commissioners also urged clear signage and multilingual explanatory materials so visitors understand the boxes are art installations and how to interact with them.
On publicity, Cortez said communications staff will prepare a press release and that the commission will be named as sponsor; she identified a reporter she hoped to invite for pre-festival coverage. Staff reported a direct-mail and billboard campaign along Beaufort Highway and expanded postcard distribution into Doraville in both English and Spanish. Festival hours were stated as 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with headliners Projecto Uno (Saturday) and Third World (Sunday) and a range of cultural performances planned.
The commission volunteered members and staff as custodians for individual boxes and agreed on a plan to circulate electronic materials and to finalize pick-up and installation schedules. No formal votes were required for these logistical plans. Cortez said staff will circulate the press materials and final installation schedule ahead of the festival.
