Three members of the public used the council's public-comment period on Nov. 25 to urge Cuyahoga County Council not to reinvest funds in Israeli bonds that some speakers said are maturing in early December.
Anne Gazzi, who identified herself as a Cuyahoga County resident, told the council that Israeli bonds were due to mature on Dec. 1 and asked the county not to reinvest "that $2,000,000 at a time when you plan to cut $20,000,000 from our budget." Gazzi linked the request to local infant health concerns and urged the council to implement two programs to mitigate preterm birth and infant mortality rates in the county.
Zizue Chiguka (identified in the record as a long-time resident) framed the issue in moral terms and urged a divestment from Israeli bonds, asserting strong criticisms of U.S. policy and past financial support for Israel.
A third commenter, who identified himself as Lou, urged council to adopt a farsighted approach to budget decisions, suggested that returning maturing bond funds could help local needs, and criticized shelter rules that prohibit outside food as harmful to residents' health.
Council did not take a public vote or make a policy decision about reinvestment during the meeting. The statements are a matter of public record and were heard during the designated public-comment period; council members later proceeded with agenda items including the approval of minutes and multiple resolutions.
