County executive previews Truth in Taxation hearing, says 3.7% tax increase proposed to address deficit

Daines explained that Cache County collects property taxes for multiple jurisdictions and that the county’s Truth in Taxation hearing concerns only the county’s share of the tax bill. Using example tax bills, he described how levies and taxable values interact; he noted that primary residences are taxed on 55% of market value while commercial properties do not receive the same exemption.
Daines said about “80% of this county have property taxes that are less this year than they were a year ago” and that 20% saw increases. He outlined the county’s budget position, saying Cache County began the year facing a $7.8 million deficit, has trimmed roughly $2.8 million through expense reductions and is carrying a remaining shortfall of about $1.3 million. “Our tax increase will be 3.7,” he stated, and said the county is still working to reconcile the gap.
Daines invited the public to participate in the Truth in Taxation hearing beginning at 6:00 p.m., described virtual access instructions and asked those who wish to speak to sign up. The council recessed briefly to prepare for the public hearing.
The presentation was informational; subsequent budget decisions will follow the public hearing and formal budget-adoption process.
