The Land Use & Building Management Committee on Dec. 3 authorized the mayor to execute a contract with Hertz Furniture Systems, LLC for student locker replacements at Nathan Hale Middle School and Ponus Ridge STEAM Academy, not to exceed $460,000, and authorized change orders up to $46,000. The committee also approved a technical correction to a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) amendment with Newfield Construction Group LLC for the Marvin Elementary School HVAC Improvement Project to reflect the correct GMP amount and a $308,648 change order cap.
Missy D moved the locker replacement item after staff described prior work at Roton Middle School. Bill, a facilities staff member who spoke to the committee, said the earlier Roton job ‘‘was completed early in July’’ and added that locker widths are being increased ‘‘from 8 inch doors to 12 inch doors’’ and in some cases to 15 inches to provide usable storage. He said parents and students have praised previous replacements.
The locker contract is intended to complete the planned locker upgrades for two middle schools; staff noted West Rocks was excluded due to other pending work. The committee asked about whether the larger lockers fit in existing corridor space; facilities staff said they had located additional wall space and, where needed, reassigned locker locations to reduce student travel time between lockers and homerooms.
On the Marvin Elementary correction, staff described the item as a typographical error in the GMP letter (a mis-typed digit) and confirmed account funds are available; the correction does not change scope, staff said.
In a monthly construction update, facilities staff reported progress across several projects: nine rooftop HVAC units at Brookside are installed with minor maintenance outstanding; Rowayton’s boiler replacement is complete with ductwork and an electrical room planned; the Brian McMahon site is preparing a pad for a new chiller pending rebar delivery and inspection; Silvermine has new VRF units and is nearing closeout; and Naramec is in early phases with phasing plans to limit ceiling tile disruption. Staff also discussed exploring rooftop solar for a high school, saying the State Department of Administrative Services could reimburse roughly 60% of installation costs if the project qualifies, which would affect the project's financial feasibility. Staff said they will return to the council with detailed financial analysis before any decision.
The committee approved the contract and the technical correction by voice vote (members present voted in favor; the meeting transcript records unanimous committee approval but does not list individual roll-call tallies).
