Cache County wins $1 million Outdoor Recreation Initiative grant for Bonneville Shoreline Trail segment

County staff told the council that Cache County has been awarded $1,000,000 from the Utah Department of Natural Resources’ Outdoor Recreation Initiative to build roughly 10 miles of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail between Green Canyon and Smithfield Canyon.
“Ten miles of trail from Green Canyon to Smithfield Canyon” is the segment described by Landis Swiner of the county trails division. Angie Zetterquist, interim director of development services, said the award complements earlier RAPs-match funding of about $400,000 that helped the county secure the ORI grant. “We got this million dollars from the ORI because of that commitment from the county,” Zetterquist said.
Swiner said parts of the project already have willing landowners and that construction and spending will be staggered across phases as easements and interlocal work with cities are completed. He noted prior smaller awards paid for earlier sections and that neighboring cities (including Hyde Park) had built connecting segments.
Council members asked about timelines and were told project spending will begin next year with phased deadlines and that staff will return with maps and more detailed schedules.
