Walker South Road parcel rezoned amid resident questions about inconsistent map designations

Resident Willie Sparkman spoke at the hearing, saying he did not understand why his property was zoned differently from the surrounding neighborhood. Sparkman described nearby commercial and service uses and asked why his lot remained agricultural. "I don't understand why my property is different from every anybody else's," he said.
Staff responded that nearby parcels had previously been rezoned after owners requested changes and that the map has been changing over time. Department staff also said a planned roundabout expected in the area may prompt further commercial consolidation and noted the parcel touches hospital property and could be absorbed or repurposed in the future.
Commissioners described the situation as a legacy zoning issue and approved the requested change. The commission recorded a vote in favor; the rezoning will advance to the parish council as required for final administrative steps.
