Eric Altman elected East Lansing mayor; Chuck Grigsby named mayor pro tem

At its Nov. 18 meeting the East Lansing City Council elected Eric Altman mayor and Chuck Grigsby mayor pro tem, swore both into office and confirmed the 2026 meeting calendar after amending the January date. The council also approved minutes and the meeting agenda.
Eric Altman was elected mayor of East Lansing by roll-call vote at the City Council meeting on Nov. 18, 2025, and immediately took the oath of office.
Altman received three council votes during a required roll-call after nominations opened; fellow council members Dana Meadows and Chuck Grigsby nominated Altman and Gary Singh, respectively. After the result was announced, Clerk Emily Gordon administered the oath and Altman signed official documents.
‘I do solemnly swear or affirm that I will support the Constitution… the charter and the code of the city of East Lansing,’ Altman recited as part of the oath. He thanked the city clerk before taking the dais.
The council then nominated and confirmed Chuck Grigsby as mayor pro tem. Grigsby was the sole nominee after three calls for nominations; the council voted by roll call and Gordon administered the oath.
Council also handled routine housekeeping: members approved the Oct. 21, 2025 regular meeting minutes and adopted the meeting agenda without correction. The body considered the 2026 meeting calendar and accepted an amendment to replace the Jan. 27 meeting date with Jan. 20 to accommodate member schedules. A later proposed amendment to add an additional late‑November business meeting failed on a 2‑3 voice vote, and the amended calendar was adopted unanimously.
The meeting concluded with the council deferring final boards-and-commissions liaison assignments to the Dec. 9 meeting and setting a deadline for council members to submit preferences by Nov. 30.
