The Durant City Council approved amendments to the City of Durant employee handbook sections 2.01 (Equal Opportunity) and 2.02 (Non-Discrimination) during the same special meeting.
Pam (city staff) told the council that OMAG (the city's municipal insurance/assistance group, as referenced in the meeting) reviewed the handbook language and recommended consolidating the material and removing Appendix B. "Amber Gooch is one of the attorneys with OMAG and when she looked at our policy... she said we really needed to update them," Pam said. The proposed changes are largely word-for-word from OMAG counsel and were presented as straightforward wording updates.
The city attorney told the council he has worked with Amber Gooch on numerous matters and supports the recommended wording: "I can assure you if she says this is what needs to be for us to comply with, all the EO's executive orders, She's on point," he said.
Mayor Tucker moved to approve the handbook amendments to sections 2.01 and 2.02; after a second the clerk called the roll and Council Member Miller, Council Member Shear, Vice Mayor Similescu and Mayor Tucker all voted "Yes." The motion passed.
The amendments eliminate Appendix B from the employee handbook and replace it with the updated EEO/non-discrimination language recommended by OMAG counsel; staff said the change prepares the city for OMAG-provided EEO training and aligns handbook language with the attorney's compliance advice.
