Conway School District spotlights student, garden and coach honors at December meeting

The Conway School Board recognized a fourth-grade student of the month, named Carolyn Lewis Elementary the 2025 Arkansas Grown School Garden winner, honored Coach Buck James’ upcoming Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame induction, and presented an ASBA boardsmanship certificate to Board President Sheila Franklin.
The Conway School District board opened its meeting by celebrating several district honors, recognizing a student and multiple school and board achievements. Fourth grader Kimber introduced herself as the district’s student of the month and described her activities and favorite subjects; teachers Miss Rogoff and Joni Murray praised Kimber’s classroom leadership and helpfulness.
The board announced that Carolyn Lewis Elementary won the 2025 Arkansas Grown School Garden of the Year (Harvest Partnership School Garden 2025). Principal Yvonne Sturmit said the school’s 10-year garden program succeeds because teachers Kristen Parham and Sarah Tyler integrate the garden into instruction and because of a partnership with Richard Clerk and the Master Gardeners of Conway as well as strong parent involvement.
The board also publicly recognized Coach Buck James for his induction into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, citing his multi-decade coaching career and state championships. An athletics representative recounted James’ wins, titles and coaching awards and said the induction ceremony is scheduled for April 2026. Board members and attendees congratulated him.
Finally, Board President Sheila Franklin received the ASBA Certificate of Boardsmanship for completing at least 25 hours of approved in-service training. The board expressed appreciation for her service.
The recognitions occupied the meeting’s opening agenda and concluded before the board moved into routine business.
