Chelsea commission rejects ban on large passenger vans on Crescent Ave; orders mirrors and enforcement

The group proposed low‑cost options: parking enforcement checks, outreach to van owners and installing convex mirrors on poles to improve visibility. The fire chief and staff said any curb modifications would be designed to allow emergency vehicles to mount if necessary.
Because the city cannot reliably ban a particular class of privately registered vehicles without broader rulemaking, the commission voted to deny the blanket ban and instead pursue mirrors, increased enforcement and staff outreach to vehicle owners; a motion recorded in the transcript directed staff to pursue those mitigations and report back.
