Council forwards ordinance removing elective treasurer position to Dec. 9

Solicitor Barry Handwerger explained that Bill 17-20-25 implements a charter provision that eliminates the elective office of city treasurer when the current treasurer’s term expires at year end and assigns those duties to the Department of Administrative Services. Handwerger said the ordinance also updates city code references where the treasurer historically served (for example, on certain pension and charity boards) and recommends replacing treasurer representation on those bodies with the chair of the finance committee of City Council to preserve council oversight.
Councilors discussed the change and the committee voted to forward the bill to the Dec. 9 meeting for first reading.
