Later in the meeting Commissioner Young raised a separate item: a review of roof replacements in historic districts. Young said homeowners and applicants have recently sought to use architectural shingles because some metal roof options are costly and asked staff to research modern alternative metal roofing products and recommend any guideline updates needed to accommodate compatible, cost‑effective materials. The motion to ask staff to explore alternatives and return with recommendations was seconded and passed unanimously.
Next steps: staff will prepare a report on alternative metal roofing materials and any suggested changes to the design guidelines for the commission to review at a future meeting.
