Council highlights downtown redevelopment and a slate of holiday events

Council and city staff used the communications portion of the Dec. 2 meeting to highlight downtown redevelopment and to promote a series of holiday events.
City staff noted recent steps taken toward redevelopment of the Dauphinsteau warehouse into a boutique hotel and said a local entity is purchasing and remodeling the former JCPenney building with potential indoor pickleball courts and other uses intended to bring more foot traffic downtown. "It's a very exciting project to see a building... being purchased and remodeled and really exciting project there," staff said.
Alderman Phillips and other council members outlined Christmas-in-Kingsport events: decorated trees across Centennial and Glen Bruce parks, a carousel twilight ride series, a tree lighting and parade on Saturday, a live nativity on Dec. 14, and the Christmas-at-the-carousel event on Dec. 19. Council members also encouraged residents to "shop local" to support downtown businesses during the season.
The board recognized city employees and private-sector partners who assisted with decorations and parade safety. No formal action was required on these communications.
