Superintendent Eric Olsen told the Monticello Public School District board on Nov. 17 that he will retire effective July 21, 2026. Olsen said he filed notice privately in the spring and intends to continue serving "in the highest of spirits" through the remainder of the 2025–26 school year.
"Please accept this letter as my official retirement announcement," Olsen said, adding that he looks forward to "making every moment count" for the rest of his tenure. He described his 21 years in the district as "an honor" and said he will focus on family after leaving the role.
Board members responded with thanks and praise. Chair Steven said the board did not want to accept Olsen's resignation but respects his decision, and other members highlighted Olsen's work leading the district through an operating-levy campaign and his engagement with the community. The board said it will continue transition planning behind the scenes.
Olsen's announcement came late in the meeting after department presentations and the audit. The board did not take additional formal action on the retirement at the Nov. 17 meeting; members reiterated appreciation and indicated plans for a managed leadership transition in coming months.
