Commissioners highlight rising food‑bank demand, health‑insurance enrollment and broadband progress

Commissioner Tom said recent Mountain Air Food Bank activity showed a sharp increase in need: "There were 406 families, and that's way higher than normal," noting the pantry also served an additional roughly 150 households for a combined total of about 556 families. He thanked volunteers and partners, including WVU professor Dan Brewster, for organizing the event.
Commissioners and the administrator discussed the county’s health‑insurance open enrollment. One commissioner said roughly two dozen employees had completed enrollment and most were projected to pay the same or less next year; commissioners and staff urged employees with questions to consult county staff or attend a scheduled webinar.
On broadband, commissioners described private providers extending service into project areas and said early competition has begun to lower prices. The chair recounted helping a citizen locate the contractor responsible for a disputed fiber‑line placement by contacting Frontier, which provided contractor information so the citizen and company could resolve the issue.
The chair also reported the county completed closing on a former Salvation Army property on University Avenue and expects to discuss future uses in coming meetings.
