Saint Marys council approves $1M local grant application for pool reconstruction amid public concern

The City of Saint Marys voted to approve resolution 25-20, a local-share grant application seeking up to $1,000,000 for phase one of the community pool reconstruction project.

City staff said a feasibility study concluded the existing pool has "significant deficiencies" and recommended replacing rather than reusing the structure. The manager outlined a multi-phase reconstruction and a capital fundraising campaign starting in December; staff provided a project estimate of $2,800,000 for the new facility, which would include a rectangular pool, a slide and zero-entry design to improve accessibility.

At the meeting, council members and residents debated the scope and cost. Some council members emphasized the need to close the pool to spur fundraising and move the project forward; others and several public commenters asked whether short-term repairs or volunteer assistance could keep the pool open while funds were raised. "I'm here tonight to represent people concerning the community pool," said Molly Redinger during public comment, urging more community engagement and clearer timelines before closure.

Council approved the resolution by voice vote. The resolution authorizes the city to apply for the local-share grant (maximum $1,000,000 allowable), with capital campaign and phased construction dependent on funding. Council and city staff said demolition and certain construction tasks would be part of phase one if grant funding is secured.

The manager said the city will form a community group to support fundraising and will share detailed designs and timelines once planning graphics are finalized. Residents seeking more information were directed to contact Parks and Recreation or the project committee.
