Council approves $88,050 contract to update Ojai historic resources inventory

The Ojai City Council voted Dec. 2 to accept the Historic Preservation Commission’s recommendation and authorize the city to enter an agreement with Historic Resources Group (HRG) to update the city’s historic resources inventory. Principal Planner Maura Macaluso said the update will extend coverage to structures built through 1985 and will re-evaluate prior listings for integrity and potential designation recommendations.
The Historic Preservation Commission unanimously recommended HRG after interviewing four finalists; HPC Chair Gina McCatton said HRG recently completed Ventura’s survey and is well-placed to work with local archives and the museum. The staff report notes the project was budgeted at $63,000; HRG’s scope and interviews prompted a request for an additional appropriation of $25,050, for a total of $88,050.
Public commenters expressed concerns about prior "windshield surveys" and urged the council to ensure the update is accurate and not unduly burdensome to property owners. The HPC chair and staff said the updated survey is intended as a research baseline to identify possible resources; any formal designation (structures of merit or landmark status) would require separate noticing, hearings and council action. The council authorized the appropriation and directed staff to execute the agreement with HRG.
