Cathedral City wins $98,000 state arts grant to activate Esperanza Park with events and a community mural

Staff told the commission that Cathedral City was awarded an Arts in California Parks implementation grant to fund a series of cultural events and a public-art project titled "Hope Rising" at Esperanza Park.
According to staff, the city originally applied for a planning grant and later pursued an implementation award. Staff said the implementation grant totals $98,000 and that the Desert Recreation District (DRD) will provide substantial staffing support for events, materials and programming.
The project will include four events focused on themes of past, present, future and community coming together, and a mural on the side of the restroom building facing CB Link that will involve community participation in its painting. Staff said community input gathered in earlier outreach was incorporated into the RFP and that the city used the CAFE online platform for the call for artists, receiving 148 applicants nationally.
Staff described the selection process: the Public Arts Commission will screen applicants, narrow the list to three artists who will develop concept proposals informed by community input, then present concepts to the public and PACE for recommendation to council for final award. Staff said the city conducted outreach to local artists but received limited response from the Coachella Valley in this call; quarterly local exhibits and an upcoming March arts festival at the amphitheater are intended to provide lower-barrier local opportunities.
Staff identified partners and support including DRD, the senior center and Boys & Girls Club; potential funding supplements discussed include resiliency grants, photovoltaics/solar grants and philanthropic support. No formal commission action was required on this update.
