The Northampton County Board of Commissioners held its annual organizational meeting and elected Ed Martin chair for the coming year, after a nomination and second and a voice vote that the county attorney reported passed 4'0 to 1. The board also re-elected Commissioner Kevin Edwards as vice chair by unanimous voice vote.
The newly seated leadership immediately discussed the board's calendar. Chair Martin presented two scheduling options: continue the current twice-monthly meetings or switch to a single monthly meeting with a second session available if needed. Commissioners debated turnout, productivity and the frequency of special-called meetings; supporters of two meetings said residents need more opportunity to attend, while others said moving some business between meetings helps deliberation.
After discussion a motion to keep the twice-monthly schedule (option 1) carried by voice vote and the board directed staff to aim to limit special-called meetings unless they are clearly necessary. The vote was taken before the board moved into the regular agenda for the evening.
The meeting then paused for a moment of silence and the Pledge of Allegiance before proceeding to agenda items.
