The chief said opioid overdoses remain below previous years (three fatal and 31 nonfatal year‑to‑date) and noted verified shots fired reports were similar to 2024. He described recruitment efforts — attendance at local job fairs, a January academy start and a July 2027 graduation — and said the department currently has about nine vacancies when accounting for academy cadets and frozen positions.
Vice Mayor Joiner and other councilors asked whether the robberies showed a pattern; the chief said analysis found no specific crime pattern and described plans to stand up a crime suppression unit and, over time, move officers into a dedicated traffic function as staffing allows. The chief also reported pending speed studies for school zones (West Broadway/Broadway Baptist Church and West End Christian School) and engagement with community partners on outreach activities.
Council thanked the chief for the report and pressed staff on timelines for staffing and traffic‑unit development; the department said the traffic unit goal would be phased in as vacancies are filled.
