The Baldwin-Whitehall School District board approved the award of multiple contracts for the McAnulty Elementary alteration project and recorded the vote in a formal motion.
District staff reported that bid packages covered general construction, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, technology and abatement planning. Targeted testing by PSI found asbestos in some floor tile and floor mastic; additional testing of chalkboard mastic in strategic locations did not detect asbestos, the superintendent reported.
The board voted to award contracts 1–6 for the McAnulty project and to include a balancing allowance to WAE for $49,800. The motion passed 7–0 with 2 abstentions. Earlier in the meeting, district staff had said collective bids came in "just a bit under 10" (million) compared with earlier estimates of $12–13 million.
Construction items and abatement plans will be coordinated with school staff to minimize risk and disruption, and staff said they had communicated with teachers in impacted rooms and that certified testing indicated no airborne risk absent demolition. Board members also discussed options to reduce costs for some finish items by direct procurement where feasible.
