North Augusta — At its Dec. 1 meeting the City Council approved two resolutions authorizing contracted legal services and grant applications.
Public defender contract: The council approved Resolution 2025‑38 to enter a three‑year agreement with the public defender of the Second Judicial Circuit to provide indigent defense in municipal court. Staff said the contract will run Jan. 2026–Dec. 2028 and sets compensation at a flat $20,000 per year, paid in two installments of $10,000. Staff recommended approval to ensure continuity of indigent‑defense services when the current term ends at year‑end; the council voted unanimously to adopt the resolution.
Parks and Recreation grant authorization: The council approved Resolution 2025‑39 authorizing staff to apply for federal funding through the Land and Water Conservation Fund for two Parks & Rec projects: a Riverview Park playground shade structure and an adaptive playground at Summerfield Park for children of all abilities. Assistant City Administrator JD McCauley told the council the grant is competitive, that the city has received the grant in the past, and that a required public hearing will be held Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m. at the Riverview Park Activity Center, 100 Riverview Park Drive. The council approved the grant‑authorization resolution unanimously.
Other procedural items: The council acknowledged the annual meeting schedule for 2026; no vote was required.
