Commerce City Police receive CALEA national accreditation, chief presents plaque

Commerce City Police announced on Nov. 17 that the department achieved accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Chief and accreditation staff told council the process began in 2023 and involved reviewing policies, a formal file review, an evaluator site visit and interviews with staff and community members.
The CALEA accreditation is awarded to a small portion of U.S. and North American law enforcement agencies that demonstrate compliance with leading professional standards. Chief and staff said the accreditation requires ongoing annual review of a portion of standards and a formal reaccreditation every four years.
Council members congratulated the department and asked questions about the process; the chief said an accreditation plaque will be displayed in the department lobby and distributed challenge coins commemorate the milestone.
