Board approves junior-high girls wrestling club after 17 sign-ups, cites Title IX benefit

The Mifflin County School Board voted to create a school-sanctioned junior-high girls wrestling club effective Nov. 21, 2025, after hearing that 17 students had already signed up.
Miss McClay, who appeared before the board, said, "we now have 17 girls sign up for junior high res," and described plans to use existing coaching staff and volunteers this season while the program builds toward a standalone team in future years. She outlined scheduled dual matches with Central Dolphin, Midwest, CD East, State College and Gettysburg and three anticipated tournaments.
Board members asked whether the program would be a club (similar to how lacrosse began) and how Title IX compliance would be measured; Miss McClay said the program will improve female participation rates and help the district's Title IX standing. She noted the team would use existing practice space, stagger times if needed, and pay officials only where required for exhibition matches.
The motion to approve the club passed on a roll-call vote. The board directed staff to proceed with PIAA eligibility filings and to monitor participation and budgets as the program transitions toward a possible stand-alone junior-high team next year.
