Commerce City Police Chief announced to the council on Nov. 17 that Commerce City Police Department (CCPD) has earned national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
Chief (Wallenola) said the accreditation process began in 2023 and required meeting nearly 200 standards, policy reviews, outside evaluation by the Rocky Mountain Accreditation Network, and an on‑site assessment. The CALEA credential, Chief Wallenola said, "is considered the gold standard in public safety" and demonstrates CCPD’s practices are reviewed by an independent body.
Councilmembers congratulated the chief and the department’s leadership; members noted that accreditation requires continuous review and that CCPD’s next formal reaccreditation will be in four years with 25% of policies reviewed annually in between.
The chief presented a commemorative plaque and challenge coins to the council; staff said the plaque will be displayed in the police department lobby.
Council members used the moment to thank officers, note the department’s reforms over recent years and encourage recruitment.
