Lewis County board adopts tentative 2026 budget, levies taxes after brief public hearing

During the public hearing, Eileen Mathis, representing the Krogan Free Library and speaking for Lewis County Libraries, thanked the county for past support and urged continued funding of information-technology costs that maintain public computers, high‑speed internet and Wi‑Fi. Mathis said libraries “are doing more than ever before to connect people to resources, whether it's books and databases or food pantries and hygiene items,” and added, “At the end of the day, access is what it's all about.”
Earlier, the finance and rules committee recommended waiving the rules to consider late resolutions. The board voted to waive the rules on a motion by Andrea, seconded by Josh; the Chair stated the motion carried.
The first resolution considered formally adopted the county budget for the fiscal year beginning Jan. 1, 2026. On the record, the motion to adopt was associated with Josh as mover and Tom Kalmus as second. The board conducted a roll-call vote; the transcript records affirmative “yes” responses from the members present and records Legislator Frost as excused. The Chair declared the budget adopted.
The board then considered an item read on the record as “Resolution number 2 39,” described as assessing and levying the amount of tax called for under the county budget as adopted. The motion was moved by Jessica and seconded by Tom Osborne. A roll-call vote on that resolution also produced affirmative votes from members present with Legislator Frost excused; the Chair recorded the motion as carried.
With no further business, a motion to adjourn was made and seconded and the board voted in favor.
