Council OKs upgrade to City Hall generator; low bid from Hawkeye Electric

The Marion City Council approved moving forward with a proposed upgrade to the City Hall generator during its Nov. 20 meeting. Presenter Shonner said the project would replace the existing unit with a 150 kilowatt, 521-amp, 208-volt natural-gas generator intended to power the fully staffed building. City staff received three bids; the low bid from Hawkeye Electric was $185,000 and included a completion date and liquidated damages of $300 per day as part of the contract terms presented to the council.
Council members asked whether the existing generator was undersized; staff confirmed the current unit powers very little of the facility and the proposed unit would support full operations during an outage. Questions about the disposition of the existing generator were noted as contract details to review. The council approved project calendar resolutions 32648 and 32649 by voice vote.
