Council authorizes sole-source Ferguson Waterworks contract for new meters and software

Maumee City Council’s consent calendar included authorization to enter an agreement with Ferguson Waterworks for replacement water meters, installation and associated software training in a sole-source contract valued at $3,588,447.14.
City staff said the current meter vendor may lose coverage and that Ferguson’s equipment integrates with the city’s existing reading technology, allowing reuse of some infrastructure and reducing implementation time. The assistant water superintendent told council the process to evaluate alternatives began in March and that switching vendors would add at least another month to procure a compatible system.
On funding, staff said the meter program costs would be split 50/50 between relevant funds and that bond funding would be sought to support the meter replacement program. Council members asked whether sewer funding would be affected and were told it would be clear how funding responsibilities are divided.
The contract amount and sole-source designation were presented as part of the consent calendar; council approved the consent agenda that included authorization for the mayor or designee to enter the Ferguson agreement.
Council members expressed appreciation for the assistant water superintendent’s work preparing the proposal and sought clarity on timeline and financing during subsequent committee meetings. The authorization in the consent calendar was conditioned on pending review of the actual contract.
