Norman presents medication-administration policy updates to align with House Bill 2047

District health services coordinator Beth Rovers told the Norman Public Schools Board that proposed updates to policy 4016 (administration of medicine) and an amendment to policy 4006 would incorporate changes required by House Bill 2047.

Rovers summarized the policy changes: annual training for teachers and school employees on allergies and anaphylaxis; a requirement that school employees contact 911 and parents as soon as possible during an allergic reaction; inclusion of prescribing-physician information on medication dosage and expiration; storage and documentation requirements for medicines; and allowing students to self-administer medication for conditions such as asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes and cystic fibrosis. "Policy updates discussed tonight are all currently in practice by all Norman Public Schools employees," Rovers said.

Board members asked whether the district maintains stock EpiPens. Rovers said the district keeps EpiPens prescribed by a physician for students identified at risk in the nurses' offices but "we don't currently have that as part of our practice" to keep stock EpiPens; she noted the state allows stock EpiPens as an option. For an undiagnosed severe reaction, Rovers said the district treats it as a medical emergency and contacts 911 immediately; she noted the district has experience responding quickly to such events.
