Resident urges splash pad as cooling option for Madera children

During public comment at the Sept. 3 Madera City Council meeting, District 3 resident Mikaela Contreras urged the council to prioritize a splash pad at Majerus (written comment also filed) as a safe cooling option for children during frequent extreme heat events.
"A splash pad would provide a safe, accessible, and much needed resource for our community's children and families," Contreras said, arguing that contained, shallow water areas make supervision easier and reduce drowning risk for young children. She framed the proposal as a public‑safety measure rather than solely a budgetary decision.
Bill Hoffridge, an airport tenant since 1970, also spoke during public comment to raise traffic concerns about a proposed roundabout on Golden State and future development west of the airport, asking the council to consider heavy truck access for almond processors.
City Clerk Alicia Gonzales noted the council also received a written comment from Tina Hernandez regarding the Majerus splash pad; copies were provided to council and to the public at the podium.
What happens next: public comments were received for the record; council did not take substantive action on the splash pad item at this meeting but staff and councilmembers will have the written comment on file for future consideration or agenda placement.
