The award, announced during the committee’s business meeting, will supplement existing support from Electric Boat and the School Department to acquire equipment and support hands‑on training, administration said. The superintendent’s office framed the grant as a strategic investment in career readiness and local labor needs, noting Quonset Point Electric Boat employs more than 7,000 skilled workers in the region and continues to hire for shipbuilding trades. Committee members were told the grant was competitive and the district had not been guaranteed the full amount during the application process.
District officials said the grant will help accelerate plans to have the machinist program fully operational sooner than previously scheduled and that the formal acceptance and appropriation will appear on a future committee agenda for official approval.
Next steps: the administration will present the formal grant acceptance and any required budget adjustments at an upcoming School Committee meeting for approval.
