Columbus City Council approves multiple police appointments, preliminary plats and small purchases

The Columbus City Council on Nov. 17 approved multiple personnel appointments, several preliminary subdivision plats, and a handful of routine procurement and budget items.
Personnel: The council unanimously approved appointments submitted by the mayor, waiving the typical two-week waiting period for promotions and hires. Jamie Levander was approved for appointment to police captain. After the vote, Levander said, “I thank you all for approving me tonight. I also thank you all for giving me the opportunity to serve this community.”
The council also approved the appointment of Tanner Dreyfus as police sergeant; Dreyfus thanked the council and said he looks forward to leading his team. Joel Pope was approved as a police officer, subject to successful completion of training.
Land use: The council approved several preliminary plats recommended by the planning commission.
- Les Schwab Subdivision: Cushing Terrell applied on behalf of Les Schwab Group Holdings LLC for a three-lot preliminary plat at the northeast corner of 23rd Street and East 11th Avenue; the city engineer said required water, sewer and storm sewer extensions are in place and the motion carried. City engineer Rick Bogus noted one lot is planned for Les Schwab’s business.
- Meadowridge Properties and Meadow Ridge (twelfth edition): Preliminary plats were approved; the Meadow Ridge item included a waiver request to permit a cul-de-sac longer than 350 feet, and the fire chief indicated no objection.
- Westfield Addition (Shady Lake Development LLC): A representative from Advanced Engineering explained the owner requested rural residential zoning with one-acre minimum lots; the council approved the preliminary plat.
Purchases and budget items: The council accepted a $13,937 quote from Library Furniture International for additional children’s shelving; the Columbus Library Foundation will reimburse the full amount. The council also approved reallocating $4,020 from CIP 26-19 to pay Schiefer Signs Inc. for new graphic designs on community service tech and code-enforcement vehicles assigned to the police department.
Procedural: The consent agenda — including minutes, a drainage easement (R25-141), an agency agreement with the Nebraska Department of Transportation Division of Aeronautics for an FAA grant supporting Columbus Municipal Airport hangar work, finance reports and payroll/bills — was approved in a single motion with no items removed.
The meeting concluded after adoption of the evening’s items.
