Nash County Public Schools staff presented a preview of central-office and facility improvements and the board discussed moving a retention-bonus proposal to next week’s agenda.
Miss Miller reviewed a series of in‑house facility upgrades at the central office — pressure washing, landscaping and removal of overgrown trees, painted breezeway and ceilings, new flooring in the boardroom, updated lighting and ceiling repairs, ceiling‑mounted cameras and two TV monitors, and repurposed furniture and cabinetry built by district carpenters. Miller said most work used district maintenance staff and noted the dramatic visual change to the front entrance and interior spaces.
Miller provided a preliminary inclusive cost estimate for the work of approximately $2,025,000, adding that the project was not yet complete and more detailed financial information would be provided. The presenter said some purchase orders and materials were already in place and that funding for the work includes capital and local sources; she cautioned the figure was preliminary.
Separately, a board member (identified in the transcript as Mister Bill) opened discussion about authorizing retention bonuses for certified and classified staff earlier than the usual spring timeline. He suggested a notional bonus of $502.50 as one example and noted the district’s out‑of‑pocket cost would likely be covered from fund balance if state funding does not cover the full amount. Board leadership agreed to place the discussion on the full‑board business agenda with numbers to be circulated to members before the next meeting.
