Summary

The La Joya ISD Board of Trustees recognized student achievements across academics, the arts and athletics, including a legislative honor for a student author, three marching bands earning Division I ratings, and the high school robotics team advancing to the UIL state meet.

La Joya ISD trustees used their Dec. 1 meeting to spotlight student accomplishments across academics, fine arts and athletics.

State Representative Oscar Longoria presented a legislative resolution honoring Ximena Lopez of La Joya High School for publishing a children’s book and for academic and athletic accomplishments. Representative Oscar Longoria, who said the resolution passed during the legislative session, called Lopez “a model student” and noted the district’s role in preparing students for future leadership. Ximena Lopez said she was “very honored to receive this honor” and expressed hopes of setting an example for future students in the district.

Superintendent Dr. Sorensen thanked Representative Longoria and the district community, saying the students “are the heart of everything that we do,” and praised the ways academic, arts and athletic programs reinforce one another.

Fine Arts Director Mr. Adame recognized three La Joya ISD marching bands — La Joya High School, Juarez Lincoln High School and Palm View High School — for earning Division I ratings at the Pigskin Jubilee Marching Contest on Oct. 18 at the district PAC stadium. “Earning a Division I rating is not simply an award, it is a testament to dedication, resilience, and excellence,” Mr. Adame said, and he credited directors and families for the programs’ success.

School staff also recognized La Joya High School’s robotics team for advancing to the UIL VAST Robotics State Meet in Dallas Dec. 10–14. District presenters said the team is heading to the state meet for the second consecutive year and named students present at the meeting.

Athletics leaders honored multiple teams for fall-season success. Executive Director of Athletics Joe Pena recognized the La Joya High School football team for qualifying for district playoffs and named head coach Ruben Farias and trainer Scott Thompson. He framed the accomplishments as part of the district’s priority on supporting “thriving students” who show leadership in and out of the classroom.

Board members and administrators thanked coaches, directors, teachers and families for supporting students’ extracurricular work and noted that these recognitions are among the superintendent’s favorite meetings of the year. The board did not take formal policy action on the recognitions.
