City removes depot tree carving for preservation; restoration planned over winter

Seth provided an update that the depot tree carving in City Square Park was removed after early signs of rot at the base. Staff plan preservation work over the winter that will include removing rotted material and treating the carving with Australian linseed oil per the carver’s recommendation.
Seth said the carving, made from hackberry and completed in 2022, has an expected life of about ten years depending on wood and exposure. The city will consider indoor placement where feasible, though indoor display is constrained by the work’s 17-foot height. Seth said staff will discuss final installation options with the Park Board and return to council for a decision in January, with site relocation planned for spring after preservation work is complete.
Staff recommended installing a concrete footing at re-installation to lift the base off the ground and reduce future deterioration.
