WACO — The Waco Regional Airport's paid-parking initiative is off to a measured start, airport staff told the City Council Tuesday, and officials are evaluating enforcement and infrastructure options to increase compliance and revenue.
Airport manager James Harris reported that last month the lot saw about 35% utilization and roughly 65% of vehicles paid for parking, per the informal report presented by Assistant City Manager Ryan Holt. Harris said the city has upgraded signage in the terminal area and will verify placement to help customers see zone numbers and payment instructions.
A councilor suggested adding reminders or duplicate signage inside the terminal after security so travelers who scan a QR code on arrival can still access zone information. Harris said staff will verify signage placement and confirmed upgrades have been made.
To capture a larger share of parking revenue, Harris said staff have consulted the city attorney's office about potential legal measures including ticketing, towing or installing gate arms. He also noted the parking lots need resurfacing and improvements that provide an opportunity to plan for better enforcement infrastructure.
No formal policy changes were adopted at the work session; staff said they will pursue operational options and continue reporting on utilization and compliance metrics.
Next steps: staff to verify signage, continue tracking utilization and coordinate with the city attorney on enforceability and capital improvements for parking-lot upgrades.
