Joliet recognizes new CERT graduates and plans Spanish-language training

John Lukancik presented an update and graduation recognition for Joliet's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), telling council the program has accumulated more than 2,000 volunteer hours since March and will expand Spanish-language offerings next year.
Lukancik said the recent effort produced 26 new graduates and three new instructors, two of whom are bilingual and will help launch a Spanish-language CERT class. "We've got over 2000 hours of volunteer time invested already," he said, and described training that covered disaster preparedness, incident command, disaster medical operations and search-and-rescue skills. Lukancik also noted a push to extend outreach to high schools, junior college and grade-school audiences and introduced a new CERT mascot named "Susie Squirrel" designed to support youth education.
Mayor and council members thanked the volunteers and noted CERT members' participation in recent community events including the tree-lighting and parade. Council and staff encouraged residents to sign up for classes and noted the program is free for Joliet residents.
