Joliet police report steep drop in shootings and other violent-crime categories for 2025

The Joliet Police Department told the City Council that shooting incidents and several other violent-crime categories are down year-to-date in 2025 compared with the same point in 2024. "In total, the city has had 386 shootings incidents this year, which is down from 614 at this time last year," the chief said in a presentation that relied on the department's ComStat digital records.
The report said aggravated batteries fell from 42 to 22 and aggravated discharge of a firearm declined from 277 to 151. Robberies were reported down about 15% year-to-date (53 to 45). The department said detectives continue to maintain a homicide clearance rate above 90% over a three-year period.
Police officials highlighted technological tools and enforcement activity: the department has deployed more than 60 Flock license-plate-reading cameras and five live-feed cameras across the city, and officers have recovered 211 firearms this period (up from 183 the prior year). A tactical unit recovered roughly 75 of those weapons.
The chief reminded residents to secure vehicles and packages during the holiday season, noting that many vehicle burglaries result from unlocked cars. The department also announced community programs including an annual "Santa's Cop" event where officers shop with children in need.
The report was delivered as part of the council's regularly scheduled meeting and was followed by applause from council members.
