Sports retailer Sports Basement introduced its new Hawthorne location to the City Council on Oct. 20 and outlined plans for community programming tied to the store's grand opening.
Marketing representatives said the Hawthorne store opened this month after a rapid lease and buildout; the team said the location currently employs 39 people and emphasized a community‑first approach that includes free clinics (bike training, backpacking, run clubs), use of in‑store community space for nonprofits and a membership program that channels fundraising to local organizations.
The company announced a free grand opening event on Nov. 22 ("Snow Fest") with the Boys & Girls Club as the highlighted nonprofit partner, DJ performances, vendor booths and giveaways. The presenters said their Basement Tier membership program gives members 10% off and asks new members to select a local nonprofit to receive the store's fundraising support.
Council members welcomed the store as neighborhood retail and suggested partnerships with Hawthorne schools and local nonprofit organizations. Sports Basement provided a Hawthorne address for the grand opening (14351 Hendry) and said community outreach would continue into the new year.
What to watch: the grand opening on Nov. 22 and the chain's local event schedule; councilmembers suggested connecting the store to Hawthorne Education Foundation and other local partners in advance.
