Deputy Howard Schamel of the Onslow County Sheriff's Office's Community Services Unit gave a set of practical holiday-safety reminders for residents preparing to travel or shop during the season.
Speaking about online behavior, Schamel warned against posting travel check-ins, saying, 'Social media. Everybody posting check ins and, at the airports and things like that, posting pictures while they're gone.' He advised waiting to share vacation photos until returning home to avoid advertising an unattended residence.
On package theft, Schamel recommended ring doorbell cameras and secured delivery options. 'Ring doorbell cameras are a great option,' he said, and suggested using delivery options that require a signature or pickup at a secure location.
The deputy also cautioned shoppers to be alert in parking lots and to lock doors and conceal valuables in trunks. For travel he suggested routine vehicle checks (fluids, wipers, tires and brakes) before long drives.
Why it matters: Seasonal shopping and travel increase risks for theft, scams and vehicle problems. The sheriff's office framed these as preventable through small, low-cost steps.
Schamel closed with a holiday reminder about priorities and personal safety, wishing viewers a safe season.
