New Canaan commission honors retiring commissioner Tom Ferguson after two decades

The New Canaan Health & Human Services Commission on Nov. 6 honored Tom Ferguson as he retires after roughly two decades of service. Commissioners praised Ferguson’s long record supporting local human‑services programs, his work with the health department during the COVID pandemic and his role in community nonprofits.
Members credited Ferguson with applying actuarial skills to town planning, producing charts and analyses that helped the commission and staff understand demographic shifts and plan services for older residents. Commissioners also highlighted his role as an original board member of Staying Put in New Canaan, a local nonprofit that helps older residents remain safely in their homes, and cited service on the Waive Any Life Care Network and the Rotary Club.
Speakers described Ferguson as a strategic resource and a voice of reason who asked questions that sharpened the commission’s work. Colleagues said his leadership helped expand pandemic response efforts and informed decisions about senior services and community programs.
The commission presented a parting gift and invited Ferguson to remain engaged as a community resource. The meeting also included remembrances for a recently deceased community member, Jim, whose sudden passing commissioners said left colleagues ‘‘in shock’’ and prompted a series of personal tributes.
The commission moved on to officer elections and other agenda items after the tributes.
